Why voices reveal more than text messages

We perceive more through voice than through text, especially feelings. What research shows, what an often misquoted finding really says, and what this means for dating.

You often hear that words make up only 7% of a message, and the rest is voice and body language. That goes back to psychologist Albert Mehrabian, but it's usually misunderstood: his formula comes from experiments about feelings and attitudes, meaning liking or disliking. Mehrabian himself writes that it doesn't apply to other conversations (source 1). For getting to know someone, the key part remains: when feelings are involved, tone carries a lot. In experiments, people even recognised others' emotions more accurately when they only listened than when they could also see the person (source 2). A "hey" message can be friendly, annoyed or flirty; on the phone you usually hear instantly which one it is.

What the voice reveals: Does someone laugh because they find it funny or to be polite? The voice often gives it away. Hesitant speech, pauses, clear sentences. Does someone wait until you're done speaking? Impossible to miss on the phone.

The problem with text chats: Text is a medium that invites optimization. We think about what to write, revise it, add emojis. The result is a curated version of ourselves, not the real one. Many people sound better in chat than they feel in person.

Many people know the pattern: after weeks of great messages, the date turns into a disappointment. On the phone it might have been clear within a few minutes that it wasn't a fit.

A short call instead of a long chat: A brief conversation answers questions that hours of chat leave open: How does the person sound? How do they talk about others? Do they laugh easily? These are the pieces of information on which we make real decisions.

Energy and interest: Does the person sound engaged or bored? Genuine interest is often audible. In our view, it's harder to fake on the phone than in text messages.

talkbeforedate is built on this idea: you call your match anonymously through talkbeforedate before you meet. No number sharing, no obligation. Just a real conversation that shows whether a date makes sense.

Key takeaways

  • Mehrabian's well-known 7% formula only applies to feelings and attitudes; there, tone carries a lot, and text lacks it
  • Text chats invite optimization, but voices don't
  • A short call often answers what hours of texting leave open
